MC okays Rs 37 cr to boost water storage capacity

The MC House today approved nearly Rs 37 crore for upgrading the water storage capacity from the existing 45 million gallons per day (MGD) to 90 MGD by using its own funds.

The approval will give city residents a relief from water shortage in the coming summer season, if the plan gets implemented .

The MC had last year sought the amount from the UT, but since the latter did not grant funds, the civic body is now going to upgrade the facility by spending from its own pocket.

The corporation had also made the provision of funds in the budget prepared for 2020-21. It wants to use money from the capital head.

At present, there is demand of 90-95 MGD of water. In summer, it rises to 120-125 MGD. Chandigarh has a water availability of 120 MGD.

The Sector 39 waterworks reservoir receives supply from the Kajauli waterworks. At present, the waterworks has only half-day underground water storage capacity. Its capacity is inadequate and the water stored in the morning is supplied in the evening, while the evening storage is supplied in the morning. If the plan is implemented, there will be double storage facility and lesser chances of water cuts.
