48th Rose Festival Starts Today for Three Days

The 48th Rose festival will be inaugurated by local member of Parliament  (MP) Kirron Kher at Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16, Chandigarh.  

This year the theme is “Women Empowerment” and “PLastic Free City“. The display board,  of Rose Festival 2020, is in pink color at the main gate of the Rose Garden in Sector 16, Chandigarh. The first flower bed is of pink roses and there will be many pink roses. All invitation cards and broachers have been printed in pink colour.

Superintending Engineer Krishan Pal Singh said, “From entrance gates to the first rose bed to the invitations, everything is in pink this time.

Last year, the theme of the Rose Festival was Pulwama. MC officials and residents had paid homage to CRPF jawans martyred in the Pulwama terror attack. Visitors will get to see 800 varieties of rose during the three-day event. Besides, there will be 1,400 flower beds and 15,000 plants in the 30-acre area. “Due to non-favorable weather conditions, some of the flower beds could not come up as per our expectations,” said a horticulture official.

Rose Fest Events at Sector 17, Chandigarh

In a first, some of the rose fest events will be organized in Sector 17 on the rear side of Jagat Mall. Visitors will be able to use the newly constructed Sector 17-Rose Garden underpass to enjoy the event on both sides. Rose Prince and Rose Princess, on-the-spot painting and photography competitions will be held. Besides, photography will also be displayed at the underpass.

For the first time, the “singer’s nite” of the Rose Festival will be organized at the Sector 17 Plaza. Punjabi singer Gurnam Bhullar will perform live from 6 pm onwards on Friday. On Saturday, Ammy Virk will enthrall people at the Leisure Valley open ground, Sector 10, in front of the Rose Garden. The next day, Satinder Sartaaj will perform there.

These live Punjabi musical nites are being organized by the UT Tourism Department. Besides, various attractions, including cultural events, stalls display, folk performances, food stalls, amusement park, and camel ride will be organized.

Every year, helicopter rides are one of the major attractions at the festival. There is likely to more rush this year as the fare is the lowest ever: Rs 1,700 per person per ride.

This time tickets for a helicopter ride have been made available online at www.shoulto.com/events/helicopter-ride-festival-chandigarh. The nearly seven-minute ride will start at 9 am till the sunset for three days. The helicopters will fly from the Sector 17 Parade Ground and go over the Sector 17 Plaza, Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden and then return to the place of take-off.
